What you are agreeing to
These terms govern your use of JournalInt during its beta, between you and Esteban Sánchez. Accepting an invitation and creating an account means accepting them. If you do not accept them, do not create an account.
You must be at least 18, and use the service in a professional capacity: for journalism, research or verification.
The beta is free, and it is a beta
The service costs nothing during the beta. In exchange, you accept the following plainly:
- No guarantee of availability. It may be down, slow, or restarted without warning.
- No guarantee of accuracy. The entities and relations are generated by software and are proposals. They are wrong often enough that the product publishes the measurement. Check every one against the source before it reaches anything you publish.
- No guarantee of durability. A beta is not an archive. Keep your own copy of anything you cannot lose.
- Features may change or disappear, including ones you rely on.
During the beta, upload only what is already public
Upload only material that is already published or publicly available: published articles, public records, official documents, press releases, public web pages.
Do not upload unpublished drafts, leaked or confidential documents, or anything that could identify a source. The service is not yet built to hold that kind of material, and this rule is what makes the beta safe to run for you and for the people your documents are about. It will be lifted, with notice and a new version of these terms, when the service is ready for it.
What you may not do
- Upload material you have no right to hold or to process.
- Use the service to harass, or to build a profile of a private individual for a purpose other than journalism.
- Attempt to reach another account's data, to circumvent the quotas or the rate limits, or to have the service fetch addresses on internal networks.
- Resell the service or run it on someone else's behalf as a service of your own.
- Treat its output as fact. This is not merely advice: publishing an extracted relation as a verified claim, without checking the source, is a misuse of the tool.
Quotas and access
The beta plan allows 3 projects, 5 documents per month and 10 MB per document. There are also per-minute limits on upload, URL ingestion and extraction.
These are deliberately tight. Every document costs money at the model provider, and the beta exists partly to find out how much. They will be raised once that is known.
The beta is by invitation only. There is no open registration: you ask for access from the landing, and you are either sent an invitation or told that there are none free for the moment. An account cannot be created without one.
Your content is yours
The documents you upload and everything built from them remain yours. You grant the provider only the permission needed to run the service on them: storing them, extracting their text, sending that text to the providers described in the privacy policy, and showing the result back to you.
The provider does not use your content to train anything, does not show it to other users, and does not sell it. The privacy policy says what happens to it in detail.
How your content is processed on your behalf
For the content you upload you are the controller and the provider is the processor, as the privacy policy explains. This section is the agreement between the two that Art. 28 GDPR requires. The provider:
- processes your content only to run the service for you, as these terms and your use of the product instruct. That includes the transfers described in the privacy policy, and keeping a record of each call to the model for debugging, security, quotas and working out what the service costs;
- makes sure that anyone with access to your content is bound to confidentiality;
- protects it with appropriate technical and organisational measures, including encrypted connections, private file storage and isolation between accounts;
- uses other providers (sub-processors) only under written terms that impose equivalent obligations. By accepting these terms you authorise the ones in use, whose names you can ask for at any time. You are told before a new one starts processing your content, and if you object you may close your account before it does;
- helps you, as far as it reasonably can, to answer requests from the people your documents concern, to keep your content secure, and to assess and meet your own obligations;
- tells you without undue delay if a breach affects your content;
- deletes your content when you delete it or your account, and when the beta ends, except for what the privacy policy says currently remains;
- gives you the information you need to check that these obligations are met.
You remain responsible for having a lawful basis to upload what you upload.
The beta is confidential
Access is given to you personally. What you see of the service that is not public (its interface, its features, how it works, what it produces and anything you are told about its plans) is confidential.
You agree:
- not to publish or pass on screenshots or recordings of the service, nor to show it to others, without the provider's permission. Saying that you are testing it, and what you think of it, good or bad, is fine;
- not to copy, reproduce or imitate the service or any part of it;
- not to reverse engineer, decompile or extract its code, its instructions to the model or its data, nor to use it to build a competing product;
- not to give your access to anyone else.
Your own content is not covered by this. The documents you upload, the graphs built from them and what you publish from your own journalism remain yours to use as you see fit. This obligation lasts for the beta and for two years after it ends.
Suspension
An account may be suspended or closed if it breaks these terms, if it puts the service or other people at risk, or if it is being used to attack the service. Where circumstances allow it you are told why and given a chance to respond, and you may take your content with you.
When the beta ends
You will be told at least 30 days before it ends, and during that period you may export your content.
At the end of the beta, either the service moves to a paid footing, which you will be free to decline, or it stops. If it stops, accounts and their content are deleted, and this notice is your warning to have taken your copy.
Liability
The service is provided as is. To the extent the law allows, the provider is not liable for decisions taken on the basis of its output, for material lost during the beta, or for interruptions to the service. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for intent or gross negligence.
Changes to these terms
They carry a version and a date. A material change is shown to you in the product before it applies, and the version you accepted is recorded.
Law and jurisdiction
Spanish law, and the courts of the provider's domicile, unless a mandatory consumer rule gives you a different forum.
