Collaborator programme terms

Version 1.0 · Effective

What this is

The collaborator programme invites a small group of journalists and researchers to help build the reference material JournalIntis measured against: documents annotated by hand, reviews of other people's annotations, and definitions of the types the product looks for. In return, collaborators earn points, which they can redeem for perks on future paid plans.

Taking part is voluntary. You are not asked to contribute any amount of work or at any particular time, and nobody directs how you do it beyond the quality rules below. Perks are a thank-you for helping, not pay for a job.

These terms are between you and Esteban Sánchez. They add to the beta terms and the privacy policy, which still apply. Asking for a seat means accepting them, and the version you accepted is recorded.

Seats

The number of collaborators at one time is limited. When every seat is taken, a request joins a waiting list in the order it was made, and the oldest one is promoted when a seat frees up. You are told by email each time.

A seat lapses through inactivity: if you submit nothing in the first 21 days after you join, or, once you have contributed, in 45 days after your last contribution. You are warned by email before it does. A contribution counts when it is submitted, not when it is accepted, and a draft does not count. You can leave whenever you like.

Your points are kept if your seat lapses or you leave, and any that were pending still settle. Asking again goes through the seat check once more.

Points

  • Points have no cash value. They cannot be sold, transferred, paid out or exchanged for money, and they are not a salary, a fee or a payment for services.
  • What each kind of contribution earns, and when, is shown in the product and on the programme page, from the rules in force. The rules carry a version, and what you earned stays under the version it was earned under.
  • Some contributions earn points at once. Others stay pending until other collaborators have reviewed them and enough of them agree, or until an admin decides. Only available points can be redeemed.
  • A person can only earn for so much work on the same document or the same definition. The limits are in the rules.
  • Every point earned, settled, cancelled or spent is a line in a ledger that nothing edits. A correction is a new line with a reason.

Perks

A perk is reserved, not applied. There are no paid plans yet, so redeeming a perk reserves it. It starts when you activate it once a paid version exists. When that happens we will announce a period, probably a few days, in which reserved perks can be activated, and how.

  • The catalogue is provisional until prices are announced. Costs may be rescaled when they are, and then only for redemptions made afterwards.
  • A perk you have redeemed is locked at the catalogue and the terms version you redeemed it under, and is never edited.
  • Perks have limits on how many one person may take. A person holds one perk of a year or more, and a reserved one can be swapped for a larger one, with its cost credited. The largest perks also need a number of your own documents to have been accepted into the reference set.
  • The perks are described by tier position (lowest, middle or highest). If the structure of the plans changes, they map to the plans in the same positions, and we adapt the description.
  • If your account is deleted, the perks you have reserved and the points you hold are cancelled with it.

What you contribute

Annotations, reviews and definitions are the work you contribute. By submitting them you give Esteban Sánchez a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence, for the whole time the rights in them last, to reproduce, distribute, communicate to the public and transform them (in plain words: to use, copy, adapt and publish them), in order to measure and improve the product, to build the reference set and its published results, and to improve the instructions the product gives its models, including by sending them to the model providers that run the product. Where something you wrote is shown outside the product, it is credited under a pseudonymous handle, never your name or your address.

You agree that Esteban Sánchez may pass this licence on to whoever runs JournalInt after him, such as a company he sets up for it, and may let the providers that run the product for him use your work for that purpose only.

You keep the rights you had. Deleting your account removes your points, your ledger and your drafts. What you submitted that other people have already worked on or that has been accepted into the reference set stays, with no author attached, because their work and the measurements rest on it. Your handle is removed from it, and from anything published after your account is deleted.

The reference set and its results are published, if at all, as annotations with links to the sources and short extracts, never as copies of the pages they come from. If you think something in them should not be there, write to : it is reviewed and, where the request is justified, removed.

Contribute published material only. Every document you add, and every example you give in a definition, must come from a published source you can name and link. Do not add private, leaked or unpublished material, and do not quote anything you could not defend as published. Material that breaks this is removed.

Quality, cancellation and conduct

  • Work is judged by other collaborators and, when they do not agree, by an admin. An admin may decline a contribution, with a reason you can read.
  • Do not create several accounts, agree with others to review each other's work, copy another collaborator's annotation, use the product's output to annotate in your place, or contribute material that is not published.
  • Points earned for work that breaks one of these rules, or that was declined in review, can be cancelled, and so can a perk redeemed with them, as long as the perk has not been honoured yet. For breaking the rules, your seat may also be withdrawn.
  • None of this happens without a reason you can read. Before points or a perk are cancelled, or a seat withdrawn, you are told why and have 14 days to answer, and your answer is considered before anything is decided.

If the programme closes

The programme may end. If it does, you are told at least 30 days before, and during that time you can still redeem the points you hold. After the closing date, points not redeemed lapse.

Perks you reserved stay reserved. If a paid version of JournalIntlaunches within 24 months of the closing date, they are honoured on it as these terms describe. If none launches in that time, they lapse, and nothing else is owed for them: points are not money. Perks already honoured stay as they were given.

Changes to these terms

They carry a version and a date. They are changed only for a reason: a change in the law, abuse of the programme, or a change in the structure of the plans. A material change is shown to you in the product at least 30 days before it applies; if you do not agree, you can leave the programme and keep the points you hold. A change never touches what you have already earned or redeemed, and the version you accepted is recorded with your seat and with each perk you redeem.

Law and contact

These terms are governed by Spanish law. That does not take away the protection the mandatory rules of the country where you live give you as a consumer, and you can take any dispute to the courts of your own domicile.
